A Trip to Temecula Wine Country
The hilly California vineyards found in Temecula Valley may not be as well known as some of the other destinations in California wine country, but this little town is booming with new vineyards and wineries every year. When my mom came to visit me in San Diego, I knew a little road trip would be perfect for us two wine-lovers. Temecula is only an hour away from SD along the Interstate 15, so the little jaunt allowed for less travel and more wine!
Temecula Creek Inn
We booked our accommodations at a gorgeous inn and golf resort, Temecula Creek Inn, overlooking the golf course and surrounding hills. Not only was the room lovely with a “luxurious with a hint of rustic” feel, but the inn’s restaurant, Cork Fire Kitchen, was delicious with the perfect late night bites and wine selection.
Since I’m not much for driving during wine tastings (one cannot properly wine taste and drive), we used Grapeline, a touring company, to drive us from winery to winery. They have fantastic and knowledgeable staff who took great care of us! And, I could taste all the wine I wanted!
Lorimar Vineyards and Winery
The first winery we stopped at was Lorimar, with stunning vineyards and a Tuscan-style tasting gallery. They have a beautiful art collection and all of the wines have a musical theme to the names. The tour the staff gave was humorous and informative and every wine sample was more delicious than the last. After the wonderful tour of the vineyards and winery, we sipped a Cabernet as we admired all of the exquisite art.
The winning bottle: Lorimar 2012 Vivace Estate Sangiovese
Our second stop, Falkner Winery, located on a hilltop, overlooking Temecula Valley and was covered in exquisite flowers. Falkner also had a secret underground wine tasting room where we tried a series of scrumptious wines and cheese platters. The tasting was followed with a tour of the grounds and production facility where we could see the impressive machines for crushing, fermenting, and bottling the wine. The gift shop was a wino’s delight with every wine-themed gift imaginable!
The winning bottle: Falkner 2012 Syrah from Rock Creek Vineyard
Callaway Vineyard and Winery
Our final destination for our winery tour was Callaway Vineyard and Winery, an impressive estate that originally belonged to the golfer, Ely Callaway. The views from the tasting rooms are stunning, as are the tasting rooms themselves. We didn’t have a formal tour of this winery, but we walked the grounds, taking in all of the amazing views.
The winning bottle: Callaway 2014 Rose of Cabernet Sauvignon
I hope this post has inspired you to discover Temecula. My mom and I are happy to continue testing wineries for you (you’re welcome) so please let us know anywhere we need to check out! It’s a tough job…we do it for all of you lovely readers!
